Jewelry Care

Jewelry Care

Fine jewelry, if properly maintained can be a treasure for you to pass down through the generations of your family.  At Boudreaux’s, we recommend certain maintenance schedules to keep your most prized possessions in tip-top shape.

Boudreaux’s offers complimentary cleaning of your jewelry while you wait and we will clean, check, and advise you of any recommended repairs or adjustments that may be needed.  In the event of repairs being needed, most routine repairs can be completed within 10 days time.

Diamonds

Diamonds are the hardest natural substance known to man, and because of that they gather oil, perspiration, and cosmetics quite quickly which can make your diamonds lose their brilliance and fire.  For pieces worn on a regular basis, we recommend to have them cleaned by a Boudreaux’s professional at least 4 times per year and pieces worn on occasion at least 2 times per year.

Colored Gemstones

Each colored gemstone is unique and can require certain cleaning techniques.  Feel free to bring us your colored gemstones for professional cleaning and suggestions on how to keep them looking their best at home.  The safest way to lightly clean any gemstone is to clean with mild soap and warm water using a soft-bristled toothbrush and pat dry.

Precious Metals

Precious metals such as Gold and Platinum can be maintained in between professional cleanings fairly easily with a non-abrasive cleaner or a lint-free cloth.  You should also avoid exposing your precious metal jewelry to abrasive chemicals such as bleach or other heavy chemical cleaners.

Sterling Silver

Sterling silver is a metal that naturally tarnishes when it is exposed to air or certain products that will oxidize it. Silver jewelry that is worn often will typically need less care than silver that is stored away and is worn infrequently.

A patina, or aging, of silver is generally desirable because it gives the silver a distinct look that people identify it by. For clients that want to keep their silver jewelry or flatware always high polished, Boudreaux’s carries a line of sterling silver cleaning tools and polish that can be used regularly to keep it looking fresh and bright.

Pearls

Pearls are one of the only gemstones that are not formed deep inside the earth over millions of years and, as such, have slightly different cleaning needs than other types of gemstones or jewelry.  Most pearl strands are strung on silk chord that can become stretched, soiled ,or frayed when exposed to perspiration, cosmetics, or hairspray and for that reason pearls should be the last thing you put on after getting ready, and the first thing you take off when you are winding down for the night.

Pearls are recommended to be restrung annually for pieces worn frequently, and every other year for pieces worn on occasion to avoid the possibility of breaking the silk chord.
